Viola Smith, a swing-era musician who was promoted in the 1930s as the “fastest girl drummer in the world” and who championed greater inclusion of women in the almost completely male preserve of big bands, died Oct. 21 at her home in Costa Mesa, Calif. She was 107.
The cause was complications from Alzheimer’s disease, said her nephew, Dennis Bartash.

Anna Farris has confirmed she is married to Michael Barrett, not long after he was spotted wearing a simple wedding band during dinner with the star on Tuesday evening.
The Mom actress, 44, revealed she and Barrett recently eloped with a courthouse marriage while talking to Top Chef’s Gail Simmons on her Unfiltered podcast.

Missing Titanic submersible projected to run out of oxygen just after 7 a.m. ET
The missing Titanic-bound submersible containing five crew members will run out of breathable air by 7:08 a.m. ET Thursday, the US Coast Guard has projected.
The vessel, operated by OceanGate Expeditions, vanished Sunday morning in the waters off Newfoundland and officials on Monday said the submersible has a 96-hour supply of “emergency” oxygen. A Coast Guard spokesperson told NBC News on Wednesday that the Titan’s oxygen reserve is expected to run dry Thursday morning.
